Is a Level 7 diploma the same as an MBA?
Level 7 describes a qualification level. It does not mean every award at that level is an MBA, or that every diploma guarantees entry to a university top-up.
Level and award type answer different questions
The UK government lists postgraduate diplomas and master’s degrees among Level 7 qualifications. Sharing a level does not make them the same award. Check the qualification title and awarding body on the specification, rather than relying on the phrase master’s level in a promotion.
Credits need to be accepted by the intended route
A published CIIHE MBA Top Up example requires a relevant postgraduate diploma or equivalent with 120 credits before a 60-credit dissertation. This describes entry and study on one pathway. It is not a formula that converts any 120-credit award into a degree. Subject relevance, recognition, experience and English conditions also matter.
Verify each link in a two-stage offer
Record the first-stage qualification and awarding body, its credits and subject, the university awarding the final degree, and the partner delivering the dissertation stage. Ask for written confirmation that your exact prior award is accepted. A university listing a teaching partner does not, by itself, confirm every intermediary’s recruitment arrangement.
Compare the total commitment before enrolling
Compare the total fees, payment recipients, entry conditions, teaching and assessment arrangements, duration and refund terms. Ask what happens if progression is declined. Recognition for employment, professional registration or use in a particular country must be checked separately with the relevant authority or employer.
